XTERRA Trailfest Riverhead
Sunday 12th February, 2012
Event information
A warm welcome to the newest edition in the XTERRA family... XTERRA Trailfest Riverhead. Poised to kick start total sport's Auckland summer schedule, this event is jam packed full of Mountain biking, Trailing running, and Trail walking goodness!
With all event options offered on the same day this year it sure will be a big day out! First up to hit the trails, in the morning, will be the mountain bikers (12km, 22km, 34km, 45km). These courses have been designed to get you to all the best bits the forest has to offer with a good mix of flowing single trail, and fast gravel road sections. These events are also perfect for anyone training for The Dual, Colville Connection, or T42 later in summer.
You have all seen Riverhead at its grubbiest during our XTERRA Auckland series, so come and experience this glorious place at its driest and quickest! Four distance options (6km, 12km, 22km, 34km) later on Sunday ensures everyone will come away more than satisfied!
We also have an Off-Road Duathalon option, for those of you that are keen on doing the double! You'll kick off with the 22km mtb, and wash that down with the 12km trail run. This one is designed specifically for those training for XTERRA - Rotorua a couple of months later.

Event Distance Options
We've made it easy for you to gather the entire gang, irrespective of varying fitness and age levels, and head out of the city for an action-packed family outing. The Mid and Short courses are available as walks too, so one event you may get to stretch out in the long or super long while your partner takes a wee whipper snapper or two around the mid or short course.

Registration process
Whether you are already entered, or entering on the day, please arrive at the event base at least 45 minutes before your designated start time
Individual entrants:
Your race number, timing transponder and sponsors goodies can be picked up from the event base on the day also. We recommend checking into this area at least 45 minutes prior to your scheduled start time.
Series entrants:
Sorry, but if you entered the XTERRA Auckland Trail run/walk series, this doesn't cover your entry into this one.
On the day entrants:
No problem if you want to turn up on the day, please arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled event start time if entering on Sunday morning.
Course information
You will be following hanging blue XTERRA tape (attached to trees, posts etc) and our standard red arrows on a white backing. Where you reach an intersection where there is a decision to be made (generally based around the event option that you are doing), this will be clearly marked telling you which way to go - please stop for a moment at these points to ensure you are going the right way, let's not have you spoil your day for not having a quick look at these points!
When you reach an intersection do not cross any tape that is laid on the ground at any time - this tape is laid out to stop you going in a particular direction. After you have passed an intersection you will again be following generic hanging blue XTERRA tape and red arrows. These courses will be checked and rechecked on the morning of the event but it is important you keep your eyes open out there!

12km MTB Ride
We have a great little ride for Mum, Dad and the kids starting just after the big 34km ride at 8.10am you will ride the final 12km of the 34km and 45km events. This means you will have nice clear trail ahead of you and be finished in time to watch the big guns coming across the line.
Course Description:
For this course we have combined gravel road with some of our favourite free flowing (not overly technical) sections of track, so if you are just starting your mountain biking career, or you've been at it for a while you should find this course loads of fun and very achievable.
We start you off with a few km's of gravel road riding up Barlow Road, this is to get you away from the milling and into the good stuff asap! Barlow Road then flattens out and you can really get into your work, while taking in the great views of the forest you get from the ridge line. From here you make a right and head down a really fun flowing downhill track (trust us, the uphill was worth this downhill!). You then head down the valley on a combination of gravel road and hard clay single track, before finishing your ride off with the truly wicked 'Thistler' tracks.

22km MTB Ride
This is an awesome intermediate ride for anyone who isn't quite up to the big ones, but would still like a course that is challenging yet achievable, and awesome!
Course Description:
With milling going on in some parts close to the base we'll take you all the way up Barlow Road to start with (sorry about that, but don't worry 95% of the trails are still there, and they are riding great!). So once you have made the climb up Barlow road, you'll go left on to Trig Road for a minute or two before jumping into a cool little downhill track off Trig Road. For the next 4km's from this point you will generally be heading down! And we guarantee you will love this section of fast hard packed trails linked by very short gravel sections.
You will then have a short climb before getting to you first drinks station.
A very cool slightly technical downhill native section follows, you will enjoy this! And from there you can really get into your work on the flat trails and roads that follow for the next few km. Once off Campbell Road the 'out the back loop' is a wicked combination fun downhill tracks, a couple of short sharp uphill's, and some optional extra's!! Once you pass your third drinks station, it's a nice and flat last km or two back to base!
Please refer to Downloads section of this page here for the course map.

TRAILFEST 6KM RUN AND WALK
This little Gem is the prefect run or walk to take the family on, or for all those very welcome 'new-bee's' to Off-Road running or walking.
Course Description:
You have a shorter section up Barlow Rd hill than the other courses but it's still 2km of the 'more or less' up stuff to warm you up prior to your turn off at Patterson Road. The result of all that hard work is the very nice downhill trail named Patterson One. It's a sweet ride down but could be a little greasy in spots. After a little stretch on the clay based Hansen Road, the full length of the long and winding trail we appropriately named 'Rooted' awaits you You'll find out why soon enough! This trail is a couple of km long but you'll be completely disorientated when you pop out on Karl Rd. From there it's all downhill to the finish!

Course safety
We recommend running with a Hydration back pack loaded with 1 - 2 litres of liquid, and other nutritional nibbles.
You can expect to be away from base for a decent period of time at these events, and we can't always get aid stations to the points where you may expect them to be.
While event medics will be at each event (they will be stationed at the event base, start / finish point) and participants may encounter on course marshals with first aid on them, it also pays to be safety conscious and carry items like:
- a basic first aid kit
- a cell phone
- a whistle
- and additional warm clothing
It's all about personal responsibility!
