Course Information

You will be following hanging blue Total Sport tape (attached to trees, posts etc) and our standard red arrows on a white backing. Where you reach an intersection where there is a decision to be made (generally based around the event option that you are doing), this will be clearly marked telling you which way to go - please stop for a moment at these points to ensure you are going the right way, let's not have you spoil your day for not having a quick look at these points!

When you reach an intersection do not cross any tape that is laid on the ground at any time - this tape is laid out to stop you going in a particular direction. After you have passed an intersection you will again be following generic hanging yellow Total Sport tape and red arrows. These courses will be checked and rechecked on the morning of the event but it is important you keep your eyes open out there!

Ahh the Hunua Ranges, a staple in the off-road/trail enthusiast's diet - jam packed with a wide variety of quality off-road goodness through, around, up and down a wide range of tracks and trails.

If you've spent time in the Hunua's before, then I'm sure you'll be rearing to get back into that amazing indigenous forest, and if you haven't - then you're in for a unique treat. Oh yes, let us never forget that Hunua is a fantastic spot to get out there and nudge those trails...!

Shorties will start in the Upper Mangatawhiri camp site. The course is a 50-50 mix of awesome dirt trail with a couple of little stream crossings and open gravel road. Roads and trails used: Blackberry trail, Mangatangi Hill Rd, Moumoukai Valley Rd, River trail.

Course Safety

COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT:SUPER and LONG PARTICIPANTS ONLY.

Due to the exposed nature of the Hunua Super and Long course: participants will be required to carry mandatory equipment specifically:

Waterproof and Windproof Jacket, Thermal Hat (Buff acceptable), survival blanket.
Event organisers will conduct spot checks on the start line and will strictly enforce the mandatory equipment rule.

Non-compliance will result in disqualification or participants will be transferred to the mid/short, there will be no exceptions.

This is for safety reasons due to the isolated and exposed nature of the super course.

COURSE CUT OFF TIME - 1.30PM (ie. 4.5 hours) -This will be enforced by a 10:45am cut off at the entrance of the Pukapuka Track for safety reasons.

Bad Weather Contingency: In the event of variable conditions or poor weather, event organisation may choose to adjust the Super and Long courses. Should this occur and a map of the contingency course will be posted on the 'Event Information' board, outside registration and participants will be notified by event organisation.

GENERAL FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS:

We recommend running with a Hydration back pack loaded with 1 - 2 litres of liquid, and other nutritional supplements. You can expect to be away from the event base for a decent period of time at these events and we can't always get aid stations to the points where you may expect them to be.

While event medics will be at each event (they will be stationed at the event base, start / finish point) and participants may encounter on course marshals and course crew with first aid on them, it also pays to be safety conscious and carry items like:

  • a basic first aid kit
  • a cell phone
  • a whistle
  • waterproof clothing
  • additional warm clothing
Should you come across an injured participant, stop and apply first aid if you are trained. Send the next participant through to the next marshal/course crew location (or back if you had recently past one) and notify them of the participants: race number, name, location and description of incident.
If you happen to become lost or disoriented on course, stop and remain calm before retracing your steps to the last know course marking. If you still cannot find the course marking, stop and put on your additional warm clothing and blow your whistle.

It's all about personal responsibility!
