Course Information

You will be following hanging yellow Total Sport tape (attached to trees, posts etc) and our standard red arrows on a white backing. Where you reach an intersection where there is a decision to be made (generally based around the event option that you are doing), this will be clearly marked telling you which way to go - please stop for a moment at these points to ensure you are going the right way, let's not have you spoil your day for not having a quick look at these points!

When you reach an intersection do not cross any tape that is laid on the ground at any time - this tape is laid out to stop you going in a particular direction. After you have passed an intersection you will again be following generic hanging yellow Total Sport tape and red arrows. These courses will be checked and rechecked on the morning of the event but it is important you keep your eyes open out there!

Ahh the Hunua Ranges, a staple in the off-road/trail enthusiast's diet - jam packed with a wide variety of quality off-road goodness through, around, up and down a wide range of tracks and trails.

If you've spent time in the Hunua's before, then I'm sure you'll be rearing to get back into that amazing indigenous forest, and if you haven't - then you're in for a unique treat. Oh yes, let us never forget that Hunua is a fantastic spot to get out there and nudge those trails...!

Short Course

Distance:
6.4km

Course Elevation
...

Course Overview:
Shorties will start in the Upper Mangatawhiri camp site. The course is a 50-50 mix of awesome dirt trail with a couple of little stream crossings and open gravel road. Nothing in there that is too tough on the short course. The gravel is all flat and the trail has a few more ups and downs - watch out for the odd patch of mud and the tree roots that will try and trip you up. Roads and trails used: Blackberry trail, Mangatangi Hill Rd, Moumoukai Valley Rd, River trail.

Drink Stations:
2.8km
Please do not rely on these aid stations, they are there as a back-up. You should come prepared with anything you might need while out there.

Long Course

Distance:
17.6km

Course Elevation:
...

Course Overview:
Start in the Upper Mangatawhiri campsite. It has a number of steep climbs and some technical running through narrow tramping tracks that have a bit of mud and lots of tree roots to catch you out. It is important to stay alert and maybe sacrifice some speed for accuracy of foot placement. Be prepared for a good workout!

Road/trails used:
Blackberry trail, Mangatangi Hill Rd, Moumoukai Valley Rd, River trail, Farm trail, Manning Rd, Graeme White Rd, National downhill track (you are running up it!), Pukapuka Track, Lilburne Rd across the Dam face.

COURSE CUT OFF TIME - 1.30PM (ie. 4½ hours) WALKERS MUST ENTER THE MID OR SHORT COURSES AT THIS EVENT.

This will be enforced by a 11:15am cut off at the entrance of the Pukapuka Track

PLEASE READ THE COURSE SAFETY SECTION IN REGARDS TO COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT.

This course is tough and for those of you that have been with us for a while, it is probably on par with the Piha long course. So while it's certainly achievable, it is tough. Depending on your fitness level expect to add at a minimum 30 minutes but more realistically 45 minutes to an hour than your normal road half marathon time.

And the good news folks - it is all downhill to the finish. We'll see you at the finish for a well deserved SPEIGHT'S, it'll taste good!

Drink Stations:
3.6km, 6.1km, 8.1km, 14km

The extension between the long course and the superlong course is not going to be the death of you, as on the whole that section is relatively friendly. However, do read the long course notes above to gain a feel for the long course. You'll have fun out there!

Course Safety

COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT:

Those participating in the long or super long courses will be required to carry:

-Waterproof/Windproof jacket

-Thermal Hat/WRAG

We recommend running with a Hydration back pack loaded with 1 - 2 litres of liquid, and other nutritional nibbles. You can expect to be away from base for a decent period of time at these events, and we can't always get aid stations to the points where you may expect them to be.

While event medics will be at each event (they will be stationed at the event base, start / finish point) and participants may encounter on course marshals with first aid on them, it also pays to be safety conscious and carry items like:

  • a basic first aid kit
  • a cell phone
  • a whistle
  • and additional warm clothing

It's all about personal responsibility!

Prizes, Parking and Other Info

You've told us over the years that you're not really into the whole hanging about for event prize givings. So, we won't be making you stay for any formalities. We have lots of spot prizes, and they will all be handed out randomly as you cross the finish line. So, don't feel obligated to hang about if you've got other things you need to do. Finish your event, talk it up about how great you are, get a SPEIGHT'S beer and a hot sausage and head for home - all good by us!!
